Scottish radio station entering the virtual world of Second Life

Fusion Unity – the only recognised Second Life programming company in Scotland – has developed a virtual world murder-mystery promotion to launch the UK’s first radio station island in the virtual world.
Aberdeen based Northsound Radio will utilise a virtual reconstruction of some of city’s most famous buildings to set the scene for a week long murder-mystery competition in the run up to Christmas. Participants will be given a daily clue and will have the opportunity to win a plot of virtual land, worth over £1,000, if they can solve the murder.
“With over 1.5 million people resident in Second Life and many major brand names such as Dell, IBM, Sony and Save the Children setting up their own establishments in the virtual world it is quickly becoming an important marketing environment,” comments Fusion Unity director Mark Duffy.  “Northsound will become the first UK radio station to set up a presence in the virtual world and visitors to the station’s Second Life island will be able to listen to station’s output online.”
To ensure that participants in the competition listen to Northsound, the stations DJs will be giving out clues to help solve the mystery on air.
“Northsound always tries to be innovative,” says the station’s managing director Ken Massie, “and this is a great way to reach a wider audience. Our island, where the murder-mystery is set, features many of Aberdeen’s landmark buildings so it is also a fun way of promoting the city.”

Second Life programming company ready to make the virtual world work for Aberdeen businesses

Aberdeen based Fusion Unity is ready to make the virtual world of Second Life and its 1.5 million regular users, work for north-east businesses.
Fusion Unity is the only recognised Second Life programming company in Scotland. It is aiming to give organisations in its home city a head-start in the race to capitalise on the business potential the wider 3D virtual environment has to offer.
The first Aberdeen business to establish a presence in Second Life is Northsound Radio, which will utilise a virtual reconstruction of some of Aberdeen’s most famous buildings to set the scene for a murder-mystery promotion in the run up to Christmas. Participants will have the opportunity to win a plot of virtual land, worth over £1,000, if they can solve the murder.
“Second Life is part of the metaverse, a three dimensional virtual world where individuals can interact with one another. The Northsound promotion will encourage more people in the area to experience Second Life and the metaverse for themselves,” explains Fusion Unity director Mark Duffy. “However, the real potential for north-east businesses lies in areas such as virtual training and facilities testing.”
Second Life is the most commonly recognised part of the metaverse, and already has a thriving virtual economy. Major corporations including Dell, Sony, IBM, General Motors and Reebok already utilise this virtual environment for marketing and sales purposes.
“Metaverse marketing is really taking off with agencies producing advertising campaigns specifically for the medium,” continues Mark. “Universities are using the environment for e-learning and charities such as Save the Children are utilising Second Life for fund raising.
“When it comes down to it, there is very little that can’t be modelled and recreated in the metaverse. For example we can model offshore oil installations and test how people would interact on a real installation before it is even constructed. This could prove very valuable when planning emergency evacuation routines and other aspects of offshore facilities management where human factors can have a significant, sometimes even chaotic, influence.”
Participants in the Northsound promotion will be able to get a glimpse of some of the projects Fusion Unity is currently working on by visiting its virtual offices, which can be found opposite the virtual Northsound studios in Second Life.
